"I don’t believe that the assault on women and women’s rights can be extracted from the overall dysfunction of all societies."

"We have to keep rewriting history and reclaiming history, especially knowing that the forces out there are doing what they can to erase us."

"There’s a long lineage of people who have been fighting this fight, because they know that we deserve justice."

Police Officer Domestic Violence Is A Crisis. It’s Time for States to Take Action. https://msmagazine.com/2025/12/11/police-officer-domestic-violence-women/ Thu, 11 Dec 2025 20:41:24 +0000 https://msmagazine.com/?p=389665 Domestic violence by police officers is a nationwide scourge. While the actual number of cases that happen every year is unknown, it’s likely in the tens of thousands. Police officers in almost every state have been charged with domestic violence since the start of 2025. Such figures demonstrate that police officer domestic violence is a structural failure, not the isolated misconduct of ‘a few bad apples.’

These numbers become even more sobering in light of police officer-abusers’ training and responsibilities, which makes them uniquely dangerous, and extremely undertrained: Less than 2 percent of police academy training time is spent on domestic violence response, while 17 percent is spent on weapons and defensive training.

Officer-abusers and their victims make clear that something is deeply wrong in our domestic violence support system. For now, we don’t understand the depth of that dysfunction, but we can be certain that more funding, better policy and less criminalization will help drive a better future.

This FDA Decision Could Transform Menopause Care https://msmagazine.com/2025/11/12/menopause-estrogen-fda-hormone-replacement-therapy-black-box-breast-cancer-women-health/ Wed, 12 Nov 2025 21:26:14 +0000 https://msmagazine.com/?p=388450 On Monday, Nov. 10, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced that the Food and Drug Administration would eliminate the “boxed labeling” requirement for estrogen products.

The “black box warning,” as it’s commonly called, is part of the fallout from a press conference that occurred more than 20 years ago, announcing the findings of the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI). It’s also been the subject of a half-century-long push and pull with the federal government.

Make no mistake, this has been a longstanding demand—it’s neither new nor MAHA-driven. Doctors and scientists have made the case for its removal since the start to no avail, arguing the data from the WHI—the largest, most expensive, and only randomized placebo-controlled study of post-menopausal women—never supported putting it there in the first place.

The FDA’s reversal of the labeling requirement is a major win for evidence-based medicine. Now it’s up to us to responsibly inform women of their choices.

The Witch Was Never the Villain. She Was the Beginning of Women’s Power. https://msmagazine.com/2025/10/31/women-witches-politics-elections-power/ Fri, 31 Oct 2025 19:02:45 +0000 https://msmagazine.com/?p=387955 Weekend Reading for Women’s Representation is a compilation of stories about women’s representation in politics, sports and entertainment, judicial offices and the private sector—with a little gardening mixed in!

This week:
—Long before Halloween became a night of costumes and candy, it was Samhain: a Celtic festival marking the end of harvest and the beginning of winter’s half-dark. Communities gathered to honor what had ended, prepare for what was to come, and find renewal in letting go. At the heart of those gatherings were women. When patriarchal religions spread across Europe, that spiritual authority became a threat.
—When my children were young, during the Halloween season, I remember thinking how natural it is for young children, especially young girls, to believe they can transform ... to step boldly into whoever they want to be.
—As we approach another Election Week, women once again stand at the threshold between what is and what could be: Women could sweep governor elections in New Jersey and Virginia. And Women are posed for gains in city elections across the country.
—New York Attorney General Tish Janes is targeted by the DOJ.
—Ireland elects Independent Catherine Connolly as its third woman president.

... and more.

‘Liberation’ Opens on Broadway—And Ms. Magazine Is at Its Heart https://msmagazine.com/2025/10/30/liberation-broadway/ Thu, 30 Oct 2025 17:29:47 +0000 https://msmagazine.com/?p=387916 The feminist revolution has taken center stage. Liberation, written by Bess Wohl and directed by Whitney White, officially opened on Broadway on Oct. 28, 2025, at the James Earl Jones Theatre, following a critically acclaimed Off-Broadway run earlier this year.

In an interview with Vogue, Wohl said she was inspired by her mother’s work as an editor at Ms.: “The arc of history is so much longer than we realize. Already in 1970 women were feeling frustrated, like, ‘When is this gonna happen?’ … And I think that that urgency really powers so much of the story of the play.”

Activating Art for Women’s Rights and Democracy: Tiffany Shlain’s Feminist Monument Makes it to the Midwest in Advance of Pivotal Elections https://msmagazine.com/2025/10/29/elections-art-women-rights-politics-democracy-tiffany-shlain-feminist/ Wed, 29 Oct 2025 22:29:05 +0000 https://msmagazine.com/?p=387848 For three years running, artist and activist Tiffany Shlain has created calls to action around her feminist history tree ring sculpture in advance of U.S. elections where women’s voting rights, reproductive rights and long held democratic principles face historic setbacks. The milestones and tribulations of women’s history seared onto its surface are particularly resonant now, as many records of women’s presence and accomplishments are disappearing from public view.

Women Made History in the East Wing. It Was Razed for Trump’s Ballroom. https://msmagazine.com/2025/10/24/women-history-first-lady-east-wing-white-house-trump-ballroom/ Fri, 24 Oct 2025 19:48:42 +0000 https://msmagazine.com/?p=387763 When bulldozers began to tear down the East Wing of the White House this week to clear the way for President Donald Trump’s $250 million ballroom, historians raised alarms that important American history was being buried in the rubble, including chapters about previous first ladies and their roles uplifting women going back nearly a century.

Among the offices housed in the East Wing is the Office of the First Lady, first professionalized by Eleanor Roosevelt during her husband’s administration.

“To me, this demolition suggests that the current White House does not think that the first lady does anything of value,” said Katherine A.S. Sibley, professor of history. “I’m not talking about [Melania Trump] particularly, but the office itself—they’re not cognizant of the history.”
